A while back, I interviewed John Carlos for my job. Here is that podcast. I guess I’ve always recognized this photograph, but I never really truly knew what it was about until I saw Spike Lee’s Bamboozled a few years ago. Since that interview, I know even more. For instance, Australian silver medalist Peter Norman supported Smith and Carlos’s decision to show the Black Power salute while receiving their medals. And years later, they supported him.

Del Close Marathon 8 @ The UCB

I made this video more than two years ago, but I lost it after YouTube obliterated my account. I also lost the original files in a hard-drive crash. Fortunately, Justin Purnell of The UCB saved it the UCB server. He was also thoughtful enough to credit me (see the page). I like this video a lot, mostly because it’s a scrappy cut-and-paste job, but also because the music fits very nicely. I figured this was the best way to mark the beginning of Del Close Marathon X.
